The honest version
Auldcathie District parkrun is a newer event in Winchburgh, West Lothian, set within a large modern park that was actually built partly because of parkrun. The story goes that parkrun was written into the planning conditions for the Winchburgh housing development, which makes it one of the few parkruns in the UK that literally had to exist by law. The inaugural event in January 2023 set a record for the most popular first-ever run in Scotland.
The course is mostly flat, all tarmac, and well-suited to faster runners and those chasing a PB. There is one hill section towards the end of the route that provides the only real challenge, but it is short and the descent gives you legs back before the finish.
The start
The start is narrow. Position yourself according to your pace because the path does not give much room for passing in the first section. It opens up after the initial short stretch and from there you have plenty of space to find your rhythm. The park and paths are relatively new so the surface quality is excellent throughout.
Kilometre by kilometre
-
Km 1Flat. Small opening loop on tarmac paths
Narrow at the start, opens up quickly. Good quality new tarmac throughout. Get settled into your pace here.
-
Km 2Flat. East side large loop
Gentle, flat running through the east side of the park. Comfortable and open with good sightlines. This is where you lock in your pace.
-
Km 3Flat to slightly rolling. West side loop begins
The course swings onto the west side of the park. Still mostly flat with only gentle undulation. The surface remains good quality tarmac throughout.
-
Km 4The hill. Up and over towards the end of the loop
The one noticeable climb on the course. It takes you up to the higher section of Auldcathie Hill with views across to the Forth bridges and the Pentland Hills on a clear day. The hill is not long but it comes when your legs are tiring. The descent is quick and gets you back to flat before the finish.
-
Km 5Flat. Back to the finish near the start area
The finish is actually slightly before the start line, which catches some first-timers out. Do not assume you have further to go than you do. The finish line comes up sooner than expected.
Elevation profile: 35m total gain

Shoe recommendation by conditions
Road shoes are the right choice. The entire course is tarmac with no trail sections. The surface is new and in excellent condition. Flat and fast shoes will serve you well here.
Road shoes still work fine in wet conditions. The tarmac drains well and there are no grass or gravel sections to worry about. The hill descent requires a bit more care when wet but road shoes handle it without issue.
This is one of the few parkruns where trail shoes offer no benefit. Stick to road shoes year round.
Getting there and parking
Park at Sinclair Academy high school which is about 400m from the start. The start is at the five-way junction in the centre of Auldcathie District Park. Follow other runners from the car park and you will find it easily.
Winchburgh is accessible by bus from Edinburgh on the X38 First Bus service, making this a good option for Edinburgh-based runners looking to explore a new course.
Practicalities
Public toilets are available within the nearby sports centre before the run. The event starts at 9:30am, which is half an hour later than many parkruns, so no need to set quite such an early alarm.
The park is a relatively new development so facilities and paths are in good condition throughout. The area is quiet and the field size is typically 200 to 400 runners, meaning less congestion than bigger urban events.
Is it a good PB course?
Yes, one of the better PB courses in Scotland. The surface is excellent, the course is almost entirely flat apart from the one hill section, and the field size is manageable enough to find clear running from early on. The hill at km 4 will cost you 10 to 20 seconds but the overall profile is fast.
The narrow start is the main variable. Position yourself well at the front if you are chasing a time. Once through the first section you will have clear road ahead of you.
