The honest version
Congleton parkrun takes place at Astbury Mere Country Park, a former silica sand quarry that has been transformed into a pleasant lake surrounded by woodland and paths. The course is three anticlockwise loops around the mere, almost entirely flat with a mix of hard-packed trail and tarmac. It is one of the faster parkruns in Cheshire and a popular choice for PB attempts.
The mere itself is a proper lake with watersports and wildlife, which makes for a nicer setting than many multi-loop courses. You will see the same landmarks three times but the views across the water keep it interesting.
The start
The start is near the Visitor Centre car park. From the car park, head towards the mere and turn left onto the path. The start line is around 150 metres from the car park. Fields are typically 200 to 350 runners which means the start is manageable, though expect some congestion for the first few hundred metres as the paths are not enormously wide.
Kilometre by kilometre
- Lap 1First loop, finding your feet
The first lap gives you a chance to settle in and assess the surface underfoot. The path is mostly hard-packed trail with some tarmac sections. Flat throughout with no significant elevation.
- Lap 2The fast lap
By the second loop you know the course and can push. Watch for the small section in front of the Watersports Centre which uses a pedestrian-marked access road. The rest of the lap is clear path around the mere.
- Lap 3Bring it home
The third loop is where the course can get slippery in wet conditions, particularly on the trail sections. The finish is a short extension beyond the end of the third lap, around 100 metres past the point where you started the loops.
- FinishExtra 100m to the finish funnel
The finish line is slightly beyond the loop end. Do not ease up at the point where the loops started or you will have more ground to cover than expected.
Elevation profile: approximately 22m total gain

Shoe recommendation by conditions
Road shoes or carbon racers are ideal in dry conditions. The hard-packed trail and tarmac surface is fast and consistent. This is the course where you wear your racing shoes.
Trail shoes are worth considering after heavy rain. Certain sections of the trail surface become slippery when wet, particularly around the far side of the mere where leaf fall can make the path unpredictable. In light rain, road shoes are still fine.
Getting there and parking
Parking is available at Astbury Mere Country Park Visitor Centre on Sandy Lane. There are two small car parks and both fill quickly on busy mornings. Arrive by 8:45am at the latest if you want to park on site. Parking costs 60p for up to two hours or £1.50 for longer. The machines accept card.
From the M6 Junction 17, take the A534 into Congleton and follow signs for Astbury Mere. If the car parks are full, Sandy Lane has some roadside parking but please do not block junctions or local residents.
Practicalities
GGs Coffee Hub is in the main car park and is open before and after the run. Toilets are available on site. The course uses shared paths so be courteous to other park users, particularly dog walkers.
A note on lapping: if you are taking 30 minutes or more, it is quite possible that faster runners will lap you during the three-loop course. This is entirely normal. Follow the directions of marshals, stay to one side of the path to allow passing, and enjoy the fact that you are doing the same loops as everyone else.
Is it a good PB course?
Yes, very good. Congleton is consistently among the faster parkruns in Cheshire. The flat, multi-loop course with good quality surfaces is ideal for chasing a time. The three-loop format also allows for good pacing as you get a feel for the course quickly.
The main variable is the weather. In wet conditions the surface becomes less predictable on certain sections and you will naturally slow down. On a dry morning this is an excellent PB venue.
