The honest version
East Park parkrun takes place at East Park in Wolverhampton, a Victorian park close to the city centre that has been hosting the event since 2014. The course is three loops around the perimeter on entirely tarmac paths, starting near the Sutherland Road entrance by the bandstand and finishing by the bandstand in the centre of the park.
It is a fast, reliable course. The tarmac is consistent, the loops are straightforward to navigate, and the park setting is pleasant without being spectacular. If you want a dependable, fast parkrun in the West Midlands, East Park delivers.
The start
The start is near the Sutherland Road entrance to the park, close to the bandstand and football pitch. Parking is on Hickman Avenue around the perimeter of the park. The field is typically 150 to 250 runners which means a manageable start without significant congestion.
Kilometre by kilometre
- Lap 1First loop, tarmac perimeter path
Three laps of the park perimeter on good quality tarmac. The first loop gives you a feel for any puddles or wet patches to watch on subsequent laps. The park is compact enough to feel intimate without being claustrophobic.
- Lap 2Second loop, push the pace
By the second loop you have mapped the course. Any puddles that developed in the wet are now known hazards. The path is clear and wide enough to find clean running if the field has spread.
- Lap 3Final loop to the bandstand finish
Three laps total. The finish is by the bandstand in the centre of the park. The final straight is clear and the finish line is visible from a good distance.
Elevation profile: approximately 20m total gain

Shoe recommendation by conditions
Road shoes. The course is entirely tarmac and fast underfoot in dry conditions. There is no reason to wear anything other than your road shoes here.
Road shoes with reasonable grip. The main hazard in wet weather is puddles developing on the path, not mud. The tarmac surface itself is fine but puddles can accumulate in certain spots which you will know after your first lap. Road shoes handle this without issue.
Getting there and parking
Parking is on Hickman Avenue around the perimeter of the park. Use the postcode WV1 2BS which brings you to the top entrance. Follow Hickman Avenue around the park and find a suitable space. Street parking is generally available.
East Park is 1.8 miles from Wolverhampton train station. From the station, bus and metro services are available to get closer to the park. By car from Wolverhampton, follow the ring roads and exit on the A454 Horseley Fields, then turn right onto Hickman Avenue.
Practicalities
Toilets and basic facilities are available in the park. The parkrun community here is well-established and welcoming. The event typically draws 150 to 250 runners making it a manageable size.
Wolverhampton parkrun is 1.8 miles away if you want to do a parkrun double or compare the two venues in the area.
Is it a good PB course?
Very good. East Park is one of the faster parkruns in the West Midlands. The flat three-loop course on good tarmac, manageable field size and reliable surface make it a strong PB venue.
The wet weather puddle warning is worth heeding but does not significantly affect pace. Come on a dry morning and this is an excellent place to target a time.
