The honest version
Isabel Trail is a relatively flat out-and-back run entirely on tarmac, which makes it a genuinely quick course when conditions are right. The path runs along a former railway line through Stafford, shaded by trees for most of the way, and it is easy to follow with no junctions to worry about.
The catch is what wet weather does to it. Despite being tarmac throughout, the path can accumulate mud and leaves after rain, and the edges in particular can become slippery. It does not turn into a mud bath the way a genuine trail course would, but it is enough to change how the course runs and feels underfoot.
The route
A simple out-and-back along the Isabel Trail. The start and finish are both at the end closest to Doxey Road, so there is no confusion about where the course begins and ends.

What the surface can look like after a wet week. Still tarmac underneath, but the leaves and mud change how it runs.
What to wear on your feet
Shoe recommendation by conditions
Standard road shoes are all you need. The tarmac surface is consistent throughout and this is a good venue for a lighter, faster shoe if conditions are on your side.
Road shoes with a bit of tread are sensible. You do not need a full trail shoe, but something with more grip than a bare racing flat will help on the muddier, leaf-covered sections and especially towards the edges of the path.
Getting there and parking
The event address is Isabel Trail, Doxey Road, Stafford, ST16 2TT. Parking is available at Stafford Rugby Football Club, which also hosts the post-run coffee.
Flooding and the alternative course
The trail can be prone to lengthy periods of flooding after persistently wet weather. Rather than cancel outright in that situation, the event may switch to an alternative course of four laps around the rugby pitches. If you have a dog, note that dogs are not permitted on the alternative course, so it is worth checking the event's social media if conditions have been particularly wet.

Is it good for a PB?
Yes, when conditions are dry. Flat and entirely tarmac, this is a genuinely fast course under the right conditions. The variable is weather rather than terrain: a dry Isabel Trail is one of the quicker courses around, while a wet one with mud and leaves at the edges will cost you some time and require more care underfoot.
