The honest version
Letchworth has been accurately described by regulars as a "farm run", and that is not an exaggeration. A combination of farm track, bare earth, gravel path and grass takes you around part of Letchworth's Greenway, home to the first ever Green Belt in the country. It can be genuinely attractive, particularly in spring, but this is a proper trail course rather than a fast park loop.
The course never closes. Whatever the weather throws at it, Letchworth runs, which is either reassuring or daunting depending on how you feel about mud.
The route
Just under two laps take you around farmland and back through the recreation ground. Underfoot changes constantly between farm track, bare earth, gravel and grass, and the course is shared with tractors and horses during the week, and occasionally on Saturday mornings too.
-
StartGrange Recreation Ground
The course starts and finishes at the rec. From here you head out onto the surrounding farmland for the bulk of the run.
-
The climb1km uphill, twice
The defining feature of the course. Not especially steep, but long enough to notice, and you do it on both laps. Underfoot here is where winter mud really takes hold.
-
FarmlandFarm track and bare earth
Much of the course crosses working farmland. Expect evidence of regular use by tractors and horses, and terrain that shifts from firm to soft depending on recent weather.
-
FinishBack at the recreation ground
The course returns to the rec for the finish after just under two laps of the wider route.

Shoe recommendation by conditions
In dry conditions the course runs fine in standard road or light trail shoes. The farm track and gravel sections firm up well when the weather has been kind.
Trail shoes with good studs are essential. The uphill section in particular can get seriously muddy, and a shoe without proper grip will make the climb considerably harder work than it needs to be.
Getting there and parking
The event is at Grange Recreation Ground, Gaunts Way, Letchworth Garden City, Hertfordshire, SG6 4PN. Free parking is available on site. If the car park fills up, free parking is also available in the surrounding residential estate.
After the run
There is no cafe on site, so most people head into Letchworth itself for a post-run coffee. Toilets are available at the recreation ground both before and after the run.
Is it good for a PB?
Not really. Between the mixed trail surface, the repeated 1km climb and the way conditions change with the seasons, this is a course to enjoy rather than one to chase a time on. A regular who has run it over 20 times rates it a genuine 4 out of 5 for difficulty, and the terrain does most of the work in explaining why.
