The honest version
Markeaton parkrun takes place in Markeaton Park, a large and genuinely lovely public park in Derby with a boating lake, craft village, orangery and light railway. The course is two clockwise loops on a mix of tarmac, gravelled paths and limestone trail. It has a rural, spacious feel given how close it is to the city, with sections running between mature trees that give it real character.
The course is busier than you might expect. Markeaton regularly attracts 300 to 500 runners and is one of the larger parkruns in Derbyshire. The start is notably narrow, which catches first-timers out. Seed yourself according to your pace.
The start
The start is by the stone bridge near the boating lake. It is narrow, sandwiched between the pond and the cafe buildings, and does not open up for at least the first 500 metres. If you are aiming for a fast time, position yourself accordingly. If you are more relaxed about pace, start further back and let the course open up naturally.
Kilometre by kilometre
- Km 1Tarmac out from the lake, narrow start
The opening kilometre on tarmac paths around the park. Busy from the gun. Pass the tennis courts and car park before the course heads toward the limestone path.
- Km 2The hill through the woodland
The main incline of the course. Around 500 metres of gravelled path climbing through woodland. About 15 metres of elevation over this section but it feels longer on the second lap. A sharp right turn at the top catches some runners out.
- Km 3Descent and grounds of the orangery
After the hill comes a gradual downhill through the woodland. The course passes near the orangery, a beautiful old brick building that is now a café. The finish briefing area is visible from here on the first lap.
- Km 4Second lap begins, back through the park
The second loop repeats the same course. You now know exactly where the hill is coming. Pace the flat sections to have something left for the climb.
- Km 5Hill again, then finish at the orangery
The second climb through the woodland. The finish is near the orangery, clearly marked. The barcode scanning happens just outside the building.
Elevation profile: approximately 30m total gain across two laps

Shoe recommendation by conditions
Road shoes work well in dry conditions. The tarmac sections are good quality and the limestone path is firm when dry. Trail shoes are not necessary but will not slow you down either.
Trail shoes are worth considering. The limestone path through the woodland becomes slippery after rain and the gravel sections can accumulate mud. If rain is forecast, trail shoes give you significantly more confidence on the hill.
Getting there and parking
There is a small fee for parking at Markeaton Park, accessed from the Kedleston Road entrance. The park is one of Derby's most popular destinations so arrive early, especially on sunny mornings. Parking fills from 8:30am on busy days.
Alternatively the park is accessible by bus from Derby city centre. The light railway within the park is not running at parkrun time but makes for a pleasant post-run distraction if you bring children. Toilets are available at the Craft Village and the Mundy Play Centre.
Practicalities
The orangery café is popular after the run. The local runners have a ritual of going to the nearby Costa Coffee if the orangery queue is long. Both options are close.
Markeaton is known as a friendly event with a strong community. First-timers are well looked after. The park has a lot to see after your run, including the boating lake, pitch and putt, and the craft village shops.
Is it a good PB course?
Yes, with conditions. The course is surprisingly fast despite the hill because the overall quality of the surface is good and the field is large enough to spread out quickly after the narrow start. The two-loop format helps with pacing once you know where the hill is.
In dry conditions on fresh legs, Markeaton can produce good times. The main variables are the start congestion and the state of the woodland path after rain. On a dry morning with a good start position, this is a strong PB venue.
