The honest version
Wolverhampton parkrun is one of the better courses in the region if you are chasing a time. Three flat laps of West Park, tarmac the whole way round, and none of the elevation or terrain changes that make other local courses harder work. If you want a PB course within reach of the West Midlands, this is a genuine contender.
The only thing to plan around is the start. It is congested for the first few hundred metres as the whole field funnels along the same path. Do not panic if you feel boxed in during the opening minute. It clears quickly once the faster runners pull away and find their pace.
The route
Three laps of West Park on tarmac paths throughout. Clear signage marks laps two and three, with a dedicated finish sign pointing runners off the main loop after the third lap so there is no confusion about when to peel off.
-
StartMain path through West Park
The field sets off together along a wide tarmac path lined with mature trees. Expect it to be tight for the first few hundred metres before the pack spreads out.
-
Each lapFlat loop of the park
All three laps follow the same tarmac route with no significant elevation change. The surface is consistent throughout, which is a large part of why this course suits a fast time.
-
Laps 2 & 3Clearly signed
Green signage marks the point where laps two and three continue straight on, with the finish signed separately to the right after lap three. Easy to follow even on your first visit.
-
FinishOff the main loop after lap three
The finish sits just off the course, clearly marked, so there is no risk of running an accidental fourth lap.

What to wear on your feet
Shoe recommendation by conditions
Standard road shoes are all you need. The course is tarmac throughout with no trail sections, so this is a good venue to wear a lighter, more responsive shoe if a fast time is the goal.
Road shoes are still fine. The tarmac surface does not become treacherous in the rain the way trail sections elsewhere do, though a shoe with reasonable grip is sensible for any puddles that form.
Getting there and parking
West Park is on the western edge of Wolverhampton city centre, postcode WV1 4PN. There is free parking on the roads all around the perimeter of the park. Spaces closest to the main entrances fill up before 9am, so arrive with a little time to spare if you want to avoid a longer walk in.
The open parkland around the finish, with the playground visible behind.
After the run
West Park has a playground for younger children, plenty of open grass for a warm down, and benches dotted around if you want to hang about and watch the rest of the field finish. The regular post-run coffee spot is the West Park Tea Rooms, right in the park itself, where a good chunk of the field ends up most Saturdays.
Is it good for a PB?
Yes, genuinely. The combination of flat terrain and tarmac surface throughout puts this among the better PB courses in the West Midlands. The only caveat is the congested start, so if you are chasing a time, position yourself further forward than feels necessary and be ready to work through the first few hundred metres before the course opens up.
